Key fob syncing procedure (8 replies)
This question might well be attached to the replacement fob query below but anyway - I have a resyncing problem with my Rover MPI (yr 2000) key fob.
It is the standard 2 button Rover fob. It has worked quite recently. The other day it wouldn't so I changed the battery (pressing buttons to discharge it first). I then tried to resync it by doing the handbook thing of pressing the lock button at least 4 times to resync.
There are no self programming procedures for a 2009 Mini Cooper. The best solution is call a few local automotive locksmiths and see if they have the tools to program this. You can save a little money by ordering a Mini Cooper Key Fob Replacement online. Key Fob stopped transmitting. They'll supply the parts or pay for the programming etc. Best place to talk about the Mini Cooper with other owners of the Mini. Some BMW and Mini models already require that the key fob be inserted into the dashboard next to the Start/Stop button. If the key fob battery is dead, the vehicle will recognize the fob when inserted. In “Comfort Access” models, the slot is only needed if the fob’s battery dies, or if electrical interference interrupts the fob’s signal.
NCS Expert program and coding guide. BMW Mini R56 Coding Sheet. Close windows by holding the “lock” button on the key fob. On 2009 R56 standard model.
Didn't work so then tried putting it into the ignition and turning it to 2nd position (electrics on) and trying the lock button. I tried numerous variations: repeatedly pressing it on and off, tried holding lock button for button for 5 secs, also tried same on unlock button.
Have tried just repeatedly pressing both buttons with fob not in ignition which I think I have had to do when have disconnected and reconnected battery. Nothing much is happening. I am now at the stage of randomly pressing things so does anyone have the definitive resync step-by-step procedure?
I have 2 new 2032 lithium batteries and tried both so don't think it is a battery problem (though I will buy some new ones anyway just to check I have not got a couple of duds).
Is there any obvious way I can tell if the replacement batteries I try are definitely working even though the fob isn't syncing or if I have a damaged key fob?
All advice gratefully received.
Addendum, just read my handbook suggesting battery needs to be Rover YWK or Panasonic CR2032. My replacements are other brands - maybe this is the problem or do you also use other brand batteries?
Other quality brands are fine, it's basically saying don't use generic cheap ones with an unknown lifespan.
Did you put the battery in the correct way up?
You can pop along to a garage and see if they have a key fob tester, these basically beep or flash when they pick up a radio signal, this just confirms the fob is transmitting. I doubt they'll charge you for it, it's a 2 sec job.
It's possible the buttons have failed, second hand fobs can be programmed to your car though, you can have upto 4 on one car. If yours is a 2000 then it will either have 3TXB fobs or 17TN (the two models are interchangble)
Hi & thanks, battery is correct way up. Fob has been fully working up to a day or two ago. Doesn't mean something (like the buttons) can't have failed though. First just want to make sure I have gone through all possible resyncing methods before looking at replacing the unit itself.
Yes, with keys out of the ignition press the unlock button about 8 times and it should sync up. If not then there is a fault with the keyfob or alarm receiver.
I take if you only have one key fob? If so take the opportunity to get a second one as a spare. If you lose it you'll need to get a specialist locksmith out to start the car, rather than just getting a mate to bring your spare keys.;)
You can just use a multimeter on the battery to test it's giving out 3v, i have had new batteries that were faulty before.
Advice appreciated. Just got some additional new batteries and tried them and no activity. I have also tried giving the battery housing a bit of a ‘press' in case something is not connecting properly, but I think it must be the fob unit itself.
I do have a spare key fob so not completely stuck but I guess need to get the other one fixed.
Thanks all!
As HB says above check the battery, but while you're doing that check the contacts at the sides of the battery holder, they very often crack. I simply solder them up. In many cases the fob will work fine until you change the battery and disturb the joints.
Unfortunately if that fails, again as HB says the alarm ecu is at fault.
Just to wrap this up, as nothing seemed to be working I thought it might be bust so resorted to sending the fob off to a place called [URL='http://www.remotekey.co.uk'%5Dwww.remotekey.co.uk%5B/URL%5D which was quite helpful - ex Longbridge chap I think. Rayman fiesta run free download. Confirmed it was actually giving a signal but I needed it resynced so got an auto locksmith to do that.
Vlan. Would recommend the remote key guy. I had given him the opportunity to refurbish the key even though it didn't need it. I know basic honesty says you wouldn‘t take someones money if it doesn't call for it but probably a few places would.
Just to add a couple of things to my last comments as I have just needed to use the RemoteKey place again. The guy is ex-Lucas (not Longbridge) & has bags of experience with Mini/Rover/Land Rover & Ford keyfobs & is a real Mini fan. Could not possibly be more helpful - would recommend him highly if anyone has similar synching problems.

How To Program 2009 Mini Cooper Key Fob Replacement
Hello, bros and sisters! Let me tell you my story, maybe it'll help someone! I have an 06 MCS.
Mini Cooper Key Fob Remote
Came with one key, that stopped working bc it fell on the floor. So, I decided to get a new one from a dealer. Got it for 180$ (165$ + taxes). The key would open and start the car, but the remote part had to be programmed. I'm not dumb, I can do it myself, right? I try the first method, listed on this page.
The one, where step 3 is '3. Put a key in the ignition and turn to the first click, then back and take the key out all within 5 seconds'.
Tried like 7-8 times, same result. Nothing happens. Then, I tried method #2, listed above. Where step 3 is '3. Turn key almost to the point of starting and back 4 times.' Step 5 is done, the doors did lock and unlock, BUT the remote still wouldn't work.
Got upset, I mean, after trying method #1 the doors didn't react at all, and now they DID locked and unlocked after completing the procedure. But the remote still wouldn't work. Had to go to work, and after coming back, tried to give it another shot. Used method #1.
And IT WORKED!!! I don't know why, or how, but it worked. Maybe, the key was, that doing steps of #1 I was doing it slower, than all the other times. I mean, this time it took around 3 seconds to do step 3, when the first attempts, I tried to do it as fast as possible. Or maybe, whenever you get a brand new key from a dealer, you HAVE TO do method #2 first, and then try method #1? I don't know, but now my remote works!!!
Programmed it myself! My advice would be - if you for some reason can't initialize your new remote, try doing method #2 first, then #1, and doing #1 don't rush yourself, do everything like the procedure says, make sure you press the buttons, so you can hear them click, etc. Good luck, bros!
Hi, First of all, this key is the egg shape first generation key and has only two buttons(wing logo for UNLOCK & single LOCK button) on it.I bought this key on line and was swapping the blade & chip out to make it work. The key will start the car and lock&unlock the doors when insert the key into the door cylinder normally. However, it would not get programmed. I see a battery sitting on top of the main remote chip. Is that the battery you were mentioned?
Otherwise, I don't see any other battery in the key fob it self.
